Last weekend saw the final event on the Feva summer circuit take place at Portobello Sailing Club.
The morning consisted of practising light wind techniques in the patchy breeze, followed by pumping and paddling races, swimming and capsizing as the wind died away completely. Over lunch the situation didn’t seem to be changing, so the sailors got creative coming up with games to play if the wind didn’t appear. Luckily, just as the fleet of 12 launched for the afternoon, the breeze started to fill in. Despite the
light conditions and some major wind shifts, 3 races took place with every boat finishing every race in some very tight battles.
Race 1
Eilean and Ross Mauritson got the best start and took an early lead, however Ewan Wilson and Fin McGhie quickly found their way through to take the first win of the day. Gregor and Rory Angus finished 2nd, with Eilean and Ross in 3rd.
Race 2
Just as the start signal went, the breeze dropped. Gregor and Rory were able to escape the lull towards the left side of the course in a well spotted patch of wind, while Ewan and Fin opted to go right, where the breeze had filled in from last time. The rest of the fleet managed to get
going as the breeze built, although a few boats were spotted doing a bit of backwards sailing first! Ewan and Fin’s strategy paid off, and they got their second win of the day. Ross and Eilean sailed into 2nd place, with Gregor and Rory in 3rd.
Race 3
This time Ewan and Fin got away first, and led for the first lap. For the first time they were unable to defend their lead however; Eilean and Ross and Gregor and Rory fought their way through on the final round to take 1st and 2nd place respectively. Ewan and Fin’s 3rd place was enough to win the event overall, with just 2 points separating the top 3 boats.
There were trophies for the winners, medals for the top 3 boats, and prizes including shirts, rash vests and board shorts for the top 3 boats,
first local boat, and furthest travelled.
Thank you to Portobello Sailing Club and particularly Max Blinkhorn for organising a great event, JP Watersports for the support of the series and all the volunteers and parents who helped us to deliver the event.
