The most recent sunny spell of weather coincided very neatly with the third event of the feva Scottish travellers, with sixteen sailors gathering at Clyde Cruising Club (Dinghy Section) for a mix of coaching and racing. Bright sunshine and light breezes greeted the sailors as they arrived at the club with sailors travelling from Loch Tummel SC and Wormit BC to join a strong contingent of local boats.
Once rigged all the boats launched heading to a windward leeward with many of the local sailors having one of their first sails in the fevas using the spinnakers. The light breezes were great for the sailors to hone their skills using the kites with the teething problems associated with drops more easily fixable than in windier conditions. As the breeze died in the middle of the morning the sailors all gathered on the start hut pontoon in the middle of the loch to have a quick refresher or seating positions and then all participated in a massive game of on the water baseball. Hamish/Rory showed there batting and boat handling skills to get four rounds of the mark before the fielding team could return the ball back to the pontoon. After this the race was on with a long downwind drag race taking the sailors back ashore for lunch.
Having taken a bit of time over lunch to think through the key points to take from the sailing in the morning the sailors gathered for the race briefing. The breeze had picked up a little for the afternoon to give great racing conditions and race officer Sophie with Nathan laying the course managed to run a very efficient series fitting five races in across the afternoon. Hamish/Rory made the most of their considerable optimist racing experience sail clear of the rest of the fleet once they’d got the hang of starting but behind them Sara/Emily, Gordon/Sean and Eilean/Ross enjoyed some close racing upwind an down as they all fought for the final two places on the podium. Further down the fleet the local boats also had some good racing as they all battled to get the most from the spinnakers in the light conditions.
A big thank you to the team at the club for hosting a great event, with particular thanks to Jenni, Aileen and Angela for looking after the shore side of things running registration and manning the galley to feed the hungry sailors. Also thanks to Nathan, Graham, Ellis and Sophie for providing safety cover and running the racing in the afternoon. The next event is at Oban SC on 21st/22nd June.
